Waffle (in English, in both cases pronounced “uáfel”)] Gofre (from French, gaufre), wafel (from Dutch) is a type of sweet pastry of Belgian origin, made with flour, sugar, butter, eggs and milk, cooked in a mold where it is pressed into an iron that prints grid textures on the dough.

There are different varieties of waffle, based on different recipes and also on the different machines and shapes used. Consumed around the world, the waffle originates in Belgium (where it is called wafel in half of the country that speaks Flemish (Dutch), and the other half of the gaufre in French). In this country, the waffel is usually eaten fresh, right after it is made. In other countries, however, frozen waffles are available for sale after heating.

Also popular in the UK and the United States, the English waffle spelling comes from Dutch wafel.
